Another exciting couple of months have flown by. August offering a sensational array of new work and play experiences.
At the start of the month I picked up a NY Lottery commercial job with Radical Media. The concept was a lot of fun as it involved a series of scenarios where people encountered a “Little Bit Of Luck” in their day…which should prompt them to buy a lottery scratchy ticket. Now the fun with this concept centers around the “Little Bit Of Luck” people who are actually personified as a creepy little mini-men in a blue suits, tie and glasses. They create these “LBOL” guy by using children on each scenario set and then we had an extra day of green screen shooting where they filmed adult males heads which would be superimposed onto the child bodies in post-production. I was looking up the actual statistics to win the NY Lottery and I politely made the suggestion that they should use sumo wrestlers and change the campaign name to “SLOL” (Sh!t Loads Of Luck). Unfortunately, they did not take my advice, despite the fact I put my heart and soul into presenting my idea in an actual sumo costume.
One of my tasks on this job was picking up a prop mask from the Advertising Agency. This prop mask was a life like human head resembling the “LBOL” character. For whatever reason the agency only packed the head in a light wrapping of bubble wrap. I had so much fun slightly repositioning the bubble wrap to obscurely reveal the fact that I was carrying a human head. I carried that head through the tourist hot spot around Rockefeller Centre and noticed many people take a double glance, not quite sure what to make of what I was carrying. But I think I went to far when I got on the subway and started to rock back and forth, chanting, “Oh no! What have I done!” Hmmm…if only I had had some fake blood. Next time, I will be better prepared.
On a slightly more serious note, it was a fun shoot to be part of, having our production RV clogging the streets of Soho for a taxi car rig shoot, seeing an entire set build at Kaufman Studios in Queens (which is also the studio where they shoot Sesame Street….”Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?...yes, yes I can!” And of course the green screen shoot and the drama when the different cans of green screen paint don’t match exactly!
getting on location shoot. Met some really interesting people, including the Key Prop, who recently worked on Batman and Men In Black 3. I feel like with every shoot I meet people who are working closer to where I want to eventually be.
I have also been upping the social-anti venturing out and exploring a few more rooftop bars and restaurants…just in case that US husband is out there waiting to solve my Visa requirements for next year and wanting Australian citizenship in return…and maybe finding true love wouldn’t be bad either.
Ok, and I need to make a confession, I may have bought 4-6 pairs of shoes in the past month. In my defense, they were all on sale (at least 75% off) and I did not purchase the $600 crystal encrusted Ralph Laren heels that a stranger complimented me about when I was trying them on…only to then ask me how much they were and when I told her “$600” she said, “No, no, I’m sorry, I’m going to be your mother’s voice and say no, you cannot have them”. I almost bought them despite her but luckily I still have some self-control.
I also ventured out to Flushing to see the US Open. Got to see Djokovic vs. Lorenzi and Serena Williams vs. Coco Vandeweghe (what a name)! Such an amazing venue and atmosphere! Can’t wait to sit at those courtside seats one day soon!
Also feel like it’s worth noting the shinanigans of Grove Tower, as they are inspiring a TV/Webisode project I’m working on writing. It’s an endless source of comedy and drama. A new roommate moved in and the boy’s celebrated with a BJ’s party. For those of you with your head in the gutter, BJ’s is a CostCo. style, bulk buy superstore. We headed out deep into Queens and the boys bought what seem to me to be ridiculous amounts of eggs, meat and ramen noodles. And I bought toilet paper to last me a few years at least. We then got roped into a half hour long “ProMop” demonstration, where my roommates heckled the poor demonstrator. And the quote of the day from the “ProMop” guy was, “I’m not ragging on the Swiffer but I’ve never bought one and I think they are a piece of crap”. We cleaned and painted the apartment only to have the new roommate throw a party and break the only two rules we set,
1. Don’t mess up our freshly painted walls.
2. No one is allowed in the bedrooms.
Sadly, I came home to tarnished walls and worse, two people making out on my bed! Some colorful Strine language was shared I can tell you that…my sheets and bed have since been burned. On top of all that, there are always the daily mysteries, including who burnt the popcorn in the microwave (we were all interrogated by the only house mate who actually has popcorn in the house), why is there someone else’s underwear in my washing and lets try it on to see if it’s women’s or men’s, and whose back needs shaving. And after all that, I look out my window at the panoramic view of the NY skyline and spectacular setting sun “and I think to myself, what a wonderful world…”
Stay tuned for next month…Loco Producer’s and Mexican KFC Commercials, Apple in the Big Apple, Tornadoes and my first film festival! Woohoo!
